There are important steps to take with homing, location and placement of your Native Stingless bees. The native bee hive must be placed in a sheltered position and out of direct sunlight from 10.00am. The Hive cannot be placed in direct sun throughout day. Afternoon sun can cook and kill a hive so careful consideration in placement is essential. Once a suitable position is found the hive must stay in that position as the Bees GPS the position of the hive and moving hive will cause bees to be lost. Maximum movement of hive if necessary is about 1 meter per day.
In cooler months and Winter your Native bees will require exposure to sun in the morning. You may need to prepare for this by moving the hive 1 meter a day to a sunny position if the hive is seen to be in shade all day. Native bees without adequate Sun during winter will not warm up enough to leave hive and will have issues with collecting food and resources.
A stable position on a stand, concrete blocks or brackets is required to mount your new Native stingless bee hive off the ground.
Your Native stingless bees require very little ongoing care, the most important part is setup, with a sheltered position from sun and protection of the timber hive from rain. You can learn about your bees by reading books such as “The Australian Native bee Book” by Tim Heard. The Australian Native Bee Book provides a complete guide to keeping Native Stingless bees. It is richly illustrated with over 500 photos, drawings and charts. This book can be purchased through us with your Native Stingless Bee Hive.
