Australia has over 1650 Native Bees species, over 200 of these are found in and around Brisbane. Most of these are solitary bees and nest and work as individuals. A small number of Native bees are social and form colonies, these bees are know as Stingless bees or Sugarbag Bees.
Native stingless bee species often found within Brisbane are Tetragonula hockingsi and Tetragonula carbonaria. These Bees are approximately 4-5 mm long, small black bees that form nests in areas such as tree hollows, retaining walls, water meter boxes and man made cavities including under concrete.
Brisbane native stingless bees are important part of the environment and aid in the pollination our agricultural food crops and native plants.
Native Stingless bees do not sting, although when disturbed often respond in defense by biting. If you come across Native bees there is no need to poison or disturb them as they can be safely removed and relocated.
